In just 26 miles (43km) it Manages to combine beautiful mountain scenery, lush cloud-forest, subtropical jungle and and, of course, a stunning mix of Inca paving stones ruins and tunnels. The final destination of the trail just can not be beaten: Machu Picchu, the fantastic “City of the Incas”.

Unfortunately, this hiking trail closes in February of each year. So, if you want to visit Machu Picchu in February, you can not enter the Inca Trail. You will have to settle for arriving by train through the Sacred Valley of the Incas.

Why does the Inca Trail close in February?

There are two reason for the Inca Trail to be shut in February:

· First because every year during that month, offices in charge of the administration have to conduct works of maintenance to ensure hikers safety, as well as the preservation of the trail itself. So cleaning of the beautiful paths and places along, repairing of damaged floors and terraces, tidy up camping areas, cutting vegetation, and other kinds of activities needed to get everything ready for the Inca Trail to reopen every March.

· The second reason is the rain. Restriction of access to the Inca Trail in February is also because of rainy season. This month is actually when we have the heaviest rains in this region. So, in order to guard the integrity of travelers as well as guides, cooks, porters, and the rest of the staff who make possible your Inca Trail adventure, it is closed during this month.

Important Things to Note

1. Don’t choose FEBRUARY to hike the Inca trail.

2. Choose other tours in FEBRUARY. However, if February is the only month you have available to visit Machu Picchu, then you should see for a similar tour like Salkantay trek, Inka Jungle or Cachicata trek. The one of Machu Picchu by train is the safest, most confortable and most appropriate due to occasional rain in the region.

3. Machu Picchu NEVER CLOSES, the admission of tourists is open 365 days a year including February, so DON’T WORRY! If you want to travel and visit Machu Picchu through any other ways (by train or through the alternative trails), you can do it.

Do you like this hike?
